Need a new camera

It's about time I need a new camera. I've been surviving on a small slr i've had for about 3 years now. I bought it second hand off a fashion photographer friend, it was her first camera. Trouble is, I have absolutely no money. It's my 18th birthday very soon so I've asked my parents to buy me a new camera :) Didn't go down too well. So, I need to save up and get one myself! (with some kind donations from parents, of course). Another problem is that I have no idea where to start! What brand should I get?! I'm aware of this Canon vs Nikon debate but everyone tells me the Canon is better... so should I get a Canon? If so, which one!? It's so difficult getting a new camera and so expensive. Unfortunately I may have to go secondhand due to my limited number of pennies!

  1. Hi Natasha,

What a dilemma! If it helps, the Can-Nikon debate has been going on for more years than I care to remember. I have used Canon and Nikon, and for the last 12 years have stuck with Nikon (currently using one of the full frame DSLRs).

If people tell you one make is better than the other, they should really explain why. It is true that on occasions one model will be better than the other, but that has always been the case with all the brands. At the moment, I think they are neck and neck.

My advice? Read the reviews online to get a feel for which models may interest you and then go and try them out and see which you prefer in your hands. You will probably find, like most of us, that one ‘feels’ better to you than the other. If you can, look at the results from each from your shoots.

Of all the professional photograpghers I know, we are split down the middle on brands, most have Nikon or Canon, but recently the high-end Sony has been making waves. They all have pros and cons – hence my suggestion above.

I hope you enjoy doig the reaserch.

    Martin
